The Polish Armed Forces have announced the commencement of two operations, “Safe Podlasie” and “Eastern Dawn,” designed to enhance security along Poland’s eastern border. These initiatives come as a strategic response to the dual threats of controlled migration pressures from the Belarusian regime and the ongoing Russian military aggression against Ukraine, which includes airstrikes on its western regions.

These operations are set to begin on Aug. 1. The decision to do so stems from a need to increase the effectiveness of actions, unify command procedures, and optimize the use of forces and resources dedicated to border protection.

During a Wednesday morning ceremony at the training center near Białystok, Defense Minister and Vice Premier Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz addressed the troops, expressing confidence in their readiness for the new operations.

“Safe Podlasie” aims to assist the Border Guard in maintaining the integrity of Poland’s eastern boundary. Polish military personnel will support the Border Guard and police efforts to counteract illegal border crossings at unauthorized locations.

This operation is a direct answer to illegal migration from the east, posing a significant challenge to the country’s internal security. Up to 17,000 soldiers from the Polish Armed Forces, primarily from the 18th Mechanized Division, known as the Iron Division, are expected to participate in “Safe Podlasie.”

Additionally, starting Aug. 1, the “Eastern Dawn” operation will also commence, aiming to strengthen Poland’s air defense system in response to Russian aggression against Ukraine, which has heightened the risk of Polish airspace violations. This operation will cover the eastern and northeastern areas of Poland and will be coordinated by the Operational Command of the Armed Forces.

The operation will involve continuous monitoring of airspace, response to detected violations, cooperation with allies in both air and land domains, and regular military personnel training. Enhancing the air defense system is seen not only as a response to current events but also as a long-term security investment essential for protecting national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Operational Command has evaluated that the operations “Safe Podlasie” and “Eastern Dawn” are crucial for strengthening national security and effectively deterring security threats. Coordination between different types of armed forces and collaboration with allies are key to effectively countering these security challenges.
