An increasing number of Ukrainian citizens are utilizing temporary protection in Poland, according to the most recent data from Eurostat. Although there was a slight decline in numbers since March, a resurgence in arrivals has been observed again in September.
Eurostat’s latest data reveals that by the end of October 2023, over 957,000 Ukrainians were benefiting from temporary protection in Poland. This marks an increase of approximately 2,000 compared to September of the same year. This figure does not include those who are in Poland under different types of residency permits. In March 2023, the number of Ukrainians in Poland under temporary protection was at 995,000 and had been gradually decreasing.
Eurostat data also shows a rise in the number of Ukrainian citizens covered by temporary protection across the entire European Union. In October 2023, this number exceeded 4.162 million, a monthly increase of over 50,000. The highest numbers were recorded in Germany (1.176 million), Poland (0.957 million), and the Czech Republic (0.364 million).
In recent years, Poland has rapidly become an immigrant country. In November 2022, the Polish Press Agency, in an article titled “Multikulti – Is Poland Ready?”, reported on the “Europolis. Migrants in Poland” study conducted for the Robert Schuman Foundation and the Konrad-Adenauer Foundation by Polityka Insight. The report noted that 2018 marked the first year of Poland’s positive migration balance.
Furthermore, in June 2022, the think tank “Wise Europa” published a document titled “Welcoming Poland 2022+,” which highlighted Poland’s transition from an emigration to an immigration country.
