Poland was the victim and not the perpetrator of the Second World War, and Russia bears equal responsibility with Germany for the outbreak of the conflict, members of the European Parliament said during a debate concerning Russia’s ongoing manipulation surrounding the historic event.
More than 50 MEPs participated in the debate provoked by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s accusations towards Poland.
The vast majority of MEPs pointed to Russian responsibility for the Second World War along with Germany due to the Ribbentrop-Molotov pact, which saw Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union divide up Polish territory.
Deputy President of the European Commission Vera Jourova expressed solidarity with Poland by stating that “the European Commission entirely rejects any false statements which are trying to distort the history of the Second World War or to present victims such as Poland as culprits.”
