MEP Deutsch posts bleak picture of Strasbourg

“Believe in nothing. Even if it means sacrificing everything,” reads a text superimposed onto the image of the European Parliament’s chamber that appeared on the Deutsch Facebook and Twitter page. The image and text with obvious Orwellian overtones carried multiple references. It was a play on the recent, controversial Nike ad campaign slogan featuring Colin Kaepernick – “Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything.” The ad, in turn, paraphrases Sophie Scholl, a member of the White Rose non-violent, anti-fascist movement, who was executed for treason by the Nazis at the age of 21. MEP Deutsch’s use of the image carries a different connotation following Orbán’s defense during Tuesday’s debate of his country’s pro-Christian culture and anti-immigrant stance.

The European Parliament is expected to vote today on whether to launch Article 7 proceedings against Hungary. The vote requires a two-thirds majority of voting MEPs.
