In a recent video posted on Facebook, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán accused European People’s Party President Manfred Weber of Hungarophobia.

The video begins with a clip of Weber speaking after a European Parliament vote in which he says, “Allow me to remind everyone that by approving the Article 7 proceedings, I voted against the country. Not against Fidesz. Not against Viktor Orbán. Against the whole country.”

The remarks, in Orbán’s view, are evidence that “Mr. Weber is a Hungarophobic man, he hates Hungarians, he has always hated us.

“He blames us for not becoming Commission president because we barred his ambitions. He is one of our oldest enemies in European politics. Now he leads the European People’s Party,” the Hungarian prime minister added.

Orbán reminded of his Berlin visit, where he was of the same view as Chancellor Olaf Scholz that such derogatory remarks adversely affect bilateral relations:

“With the German chancellor, we clarified that the conflicts between Manfred Weber and Hungary are not German-Hungarian conflicts. They do not burden German-Hungarian cooperation, this is a Brussels vs. Hungary conflict,” he added.
