As a member of NATO, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán reassured other members that it will stand by its ally, and he did just that.
“Hungary stands in full solidarity with Poland following the recent drone incident. The violation of Poland’s territorial integrity is unacceptable,” the Hungarian prime minister wrote on X.
He called the wave of Russian drones entering Polish airspace a sign that “calling for peace in the Russia-Ukraine war is reasonable and rational.” Orbán also reiterated his support for U.S. President Trump’s peace efforts.

The incident proves that our policy of calling for peace in the Russia-Ukraine war is reasonable and rational. Living in the shadow…

Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski, however, is not known for desiring peace on any level and has often sniped at Orbán and his pro-peace stance. He was quick to reply to Orbán, posting that the only thing proven by Poland’s night of defense against Russian attack drones was that Hungary “should get off the fence and condemn Russian aggression.”
Sikorski is demanding Hungary abandon its pro-peace stance, hit Russia with more sanctions, and accept Ukraine into the EU. Notably, Ukraine is still at war with Russia, and the costs of integrating Ukraine into the EU go into the hundreds of billions, at the very least.
Orbán’s post also warned that “war is fraught with risks and dangers.” NATO chief Mark Rutte agreed. Commenting on Moscow’s violation of Poland’s airspace, Rutte said, “whether it was intentional or not, it is absolutely reckless. It is absolutely dangerous.” He also made clear that this had not been “an isolated incident.”
A full NATO investigation into the incident, during which NATO fighter jets scrambled to shoot down multiple Russian drones, is ongoing.
Although Trump has actively pursued peace in Ukraine and even touted his good relations with Putin, which he thought would help him end the war quickly, he has become increasingly frustrated with Moscow’s aggressions and escalating attacks on Ukraine.
In response to the drones being shot down over Poland, Trump posted to Truth Social, “What’s with Russia violating Poland’s airspace with drones? Here we go!” yesterday morning.
Polish President Karol Nawrocki has also been on the phone with Trump and other allies and has publicly asserted that everyone is unified behind Poland.
“I just spoke by phone with U.S. President Donald Trump about the multiple violations of Polish airspace by Russian drones that occurred tonight. This conversation is part of a series of consultations I’ve been conducting with our allies. Today’s talks reaffirmed our unity,” he posted on X.
