Hungarian opposition leader, Péter Magyar, is once again working against Hungarian interests in Brussels with his backing of the catastrophic Mercosur free trade deal, according to Fidesz MEP Csaba Dömötör, who is part of the conservative Patriots for Europe group in the European Parliament.
“What is happening in Brussels now poses a serious threat to the future of Hungarian farmers,” said Dömötör, reports Mandiner.
According to him, this is why European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is facing a motion of no confidence.
The Mercosur trade agreement would allow a huge amount of agricultural products from South American countries to enter the European Union duty-free, while at the same time opening up markets for Ukraine.
According to Dömötör, this would be a serious blow to Hungarian and European farmers, especially in light of the fact that agricultural subsidies would be reduced by 20 percent in the EU budget, which, together with inflation, could mean a real value decrease of up to 50 percent.
Moreover, incoming products from Mercosur countries do not comply with the strict environmental and animal welfare rules that European farmers are obliged to adhere to – and there is practically no possibility of control.
The report also mentioned the no-confidence motion against von der Leyen, which is closely related to the imposition of the Mercosur agreement. According to the Fidesz faction, it is no coincidence that the agreement has become the focus of the confidence debate: the grand coalition in Brussels wants to pass the agreement at all costs.
According to Dömötör, while Péter Magyar is also at fault, as he pretends to be defending farmers, while his own political grouping in the European Parliament, the European People’s Party (EPP), is fully supporting the Mercosur agreement and the cutting of agricultural resources. Dömötör said this a hypocritical political farce.
