German police are seeking two Persian-speaking men after a 25-year-old woman reported she was raped early Friday in the city center next to a statue of Karl Marx, known as the “Father of Communism.”

“The woman was in the city center with a friend on the night from last Thursday to Friday. On their way to the parked car, they reportedly encountered two men who had stopped them,” the police described the case.

Investigators said one man started distracting her friend while the other pulled the 25-year-old into bushes behind a building at the Karl Marx Monument on Brückenstrasse, and raped her.

“When the perpetrator heard the voice of an unknown passerby passing nearby, he let go of her and fled,” stated the police.

The woman contacted police the next day. Officers opened an investigation and issued a public appeal for witnesses, particularly anyone who was between the Karl Marx Monument and Käthe-Kollwitz-Strasse late Friday or early Saturday, and the unidentified passerby whose voice apparently interrupted the attack.

The woman describes the alleged rapist as being about 1.75 meters tall and thin. He had black, wavy, short hair, a three-day beard, and wore a dark down jacket.

Police said he spoke some German. The second man was described as about 1.90 meters tall, strongly built and dark-skinned.

“According to the victims, the men, who were about 30 years old, spoke Persian among themselves,” read the police report. Although Persian is predominately spoken in Iran, other countries like Afghanistan and Tajikistan also feature significant Persian-speaking populations.

No arrests have been announced. The Chemnitz criminal police are seeking witnesses and information about the case.
