The former president of the European Council and European People’s Party (EPP) President Donald Tusk did not do enough to cease the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, Poland’s Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Thursday.
“Mr. Donald Tusk stood at the helm of Nord Stream 2; the European People’s Party led to the creation of that pipeline. Unfortunately, Tusk did nothing to prevent that,” Morawiecki claimed, instead offering praise to the “huge pressure from the American and Baltic States side” as the primary reason why Europe now “speaks Polish about Nord Stream 2.”
The Polish prime minister also underlined that Europe was now “speaking Polish” regarding the sanctions package on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine, and stated that this was a real achievement aimed to facilitating the development towards peace.

Morawiecki repeated that “Donald Tusk leads the Nord Stream 2 party” and called on him to resign from his position as the president of the EPP.
“Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 are EPP projects,” he claimed. “These are German projects governed by the EPP, and Tusk is at the head of the EPP. What had Tusk done as president of the European Council after Russia took over Crimea?” Morawiecki asked.
Morawiecki emphasized that Tusk had not even worked out any sanctions and that it was because of this low level of sanctions that Russia had been allowed further aggression today.
The construction of Nord Stream 2 which runs across the bed of the Baltic Sea, bypassing Poland and Ukraine and linking to Germany directly from Russia. It was completed in September 2021. The pipeline must still be certified for use by the EU and Germany, however, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated on Tuesday that he had made the decision to withdraw the certification process, at least for the time being.
