Many Germans who committed war crimes against Poles during World War II “were never held to account,” Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said at a press conference in the Silesia region of southern Poland on Wednesday.
Asked what Poland has done in the last few years to obtain reparations from Germany for damages incurred during World War II, Morawiecki replied that “for four years we have been in the process of preparing a complex report that will detail not only all the German war crimes but also all the destruction that was caused.”
The Polish prime minister said that his country wanted the world to be fully acquainted with this report and revealed the document was being translated into several languages. The report will have full documentary evidence, historical sources, and a very precise calculation of the damages estimated at current prices, he added.
Morawiecki said that Poland was one of the countries that suffered the most during World War II; however, it received very little compensation.
The report was prepared by the Reparations Parliamentary Group who reported back to the prime minister in December 2021.
According to a survey of public opinion carried out by the CBOS research center in October last year, 64 percent of Poles support Poland seeking reparations for damages incurred during World War II from Germany.
