The Czech mini-series #martyisdead has been nominated for an International Emmy Award. The thriller about cyberbullying is the first Czech show that could possibly win the award.
The series is nominated in the short series category. The winners of the 11 categories will be announced on November 23 during the 48th International Emmy Awards ceremony in New York.
The American Emmy Awards were dominated by the Watchmen series a few days ago, with this year’s ceremony taking place without spectators or a red carpet.
The theme of the #martyisdead miniseries is cyberbullying. The series follows the story of fifteen-year-old Martin alias Marty, who records himself and his loved ones on a mobile phone in moments that everyone would rather erase from their memory. His parents learn the hardest way about a part of their child’s life they had no idea existed. The series also deals with blackmail, first love, and how far a prank can go.
“We are very happy. It is a selection from a thousand world series, so the nomination is very prestigious. We are glad that after the success in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, the series is also successful abroad. It is great that a Czech genre production can succeed in the world,” said producers Vratislav Šlajer and Jakub Košťál from Bionaut.
The series was directed by Pavel Soukup, written by Jaroslav T. Miška and Jan Stehlík. It was created by Bionaut, Mall.tv, Cz.nic, in collaboration with the Safely on the Net project. The sequel to the series called #annaismissing is again co-produced by Bionaut and Mall.tv, and will appear in cinemas and on internet television in May 2021.
Nominations for the International Emmy Awards are not the only success of the #martyisdead series. It also has a chance to score at the Křišťálová Lupa 2020 – Czech Internet Award, in which it was nominated for the best online video. Last year, it became the best web series in Central and Eastern Europe at the Serial Killer festival, where it premiered.
The International Emmy Awards were announced by the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and have been awarded annually in November since 1973.
