Country pays homage to fallen soldiers

The special ceremony, held at Václav Havel Airport, was attended by President Miloš Zeman, Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, Defence Ministry officials, family and friends. The three soldiers killed by a suicide bomber on Sunday in Afghanistan will be buried with military honors.

While the army chaplain Jaroslav Knichal was the only one to speak at the ceremony, the sound of eight thousand sirens across the Czech Republic also honoured the memory of the dead.

President Milos Zeman will award the soldiers with medals of bravery on October 28th. The Minister of Defence Lubomir Metnar said that he is going to visit Czech soldiers in Afghanistan in the next weeks.

According to Lenka Šmerdová ,head of the Military Solidarity Fund, the soldiers’ deaths sparked a strong wave of solidarity with thousands donating to the families of the deceased.
