Lottery and sports betting operator Sazka Group announced that one of its players won the second-highest amount in history, exceeding 250 million korunas (nearly €10 million). All the winner did was buy a lottery ticket for 220 korunas (€8.60) and guess the right numbers.

The latest winner of the lottery called Sportka and bet a full ticket of ten columns with randomly selected numbers.

So far, the highest amount of money won in the Sportka lottery was almost 400 million korunas (€16 million). In May 2015, a Czech bettor also won a record amount of 2.46 billion korunas (€98.4 million) in the EuroJackpot multinational lottery.

However, lottery rules in the Czech Republic will go through some changes after the Chamber of Deputies recently approved a government proposal to raise the lottery tax rate from 23 percent to 35 percent.

As a result, Sazka Group Spokesman Václav Friedmann pointed out that if the lottery tax rate is raised, this is probably the last time someone will win such a high amount of money while betting only 220 korunas (€8.60).

“We cannot rule out a lottery tickets price increase due to the higher tax rates,” Friedmann added.

The Sportka lottery of the Sazka Group was first drawn in 1957. Since October 2014, the Eurojackpot lottery is also a part of Sazka Group’s services.
