Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán isn’t just a capable national leader. He’s also a pretty good cook. In a video which was originally produced in 2018, Orbán demonstrated his particular method for preparing an Easter ham. His recipe calls for garlic, pepper, bay leaves, pure water, and a lot of patience: it takes 4-6 hours to cook the ham, depending on its size.

The PM explains that you need to begin preparing the ham the night before Easter so that it’s ready before the children wake up.

Orbán sports an apron that he personally received from the famed French chef Paul Bocuse in the video. The chef was hailed as “the pope of gastronomy” for his culinary achievements.

Orbán has often posted family-oriented Easter videos and photos to his social media. In 2023 he presented yet another video showing him preparing an Easter ham, this time cooking it with the help of his grandchildren.

In a new video that was posted to Orbán’s Facebook page on Holy Saturday, clips from the 2018 video were interspersed with additional suggestions on how to prepare the best Easter ham offered by other sitting Hungarian politicians, including Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, Justice Minister Bence Tuzson, and Chairman Zsolt Semjén of Fidesz’s coalition partner, the Christian Democratic People’s Party. (There are unfortunately no English subtitles for this video.)
