Hungarian speed skating team sets new 5,000m world record

The Hungarian speed skating relay team set a new 5,000 meter world record of 6:28.625 at the season opening World Cup series in Calgary, Origo reports.

The team consisting of Krueger Cole, brothers of Chinese extraction Liu Shaoang, Liu Shaolin Sándor and Csaba Burján beat South Korea and the Netherlands in the five-team finale and set a new world record. The previous world record was held by the U.S. relay team for almost a year.

Additionally, Liu Shaoang – the youngest of the Liu brothers – also won gold in the 1,000 meter and silver in the 500 meter discipline. The next stage of the World Cup series will be held in Salt Lake City this coming weekend.
