PM Orbán made the announcement after meeting Cardinal Mario Zenari, Apostolic Nuncio to Syria at his Budapest office.

“Hungary is committed to helping the communities and families in need in the Middle East and would like to contribute to the effort of relieving the humanitarian catastrophe caused by the war,” Orbán said. “Hungary remains firm in its position that the problems should not be brought to Europe but rather help should be delivered to where the problems are.”

The Hungarian help will cover the operating cost of three hospitals: the St Louis hospital in Aleppo, and the French and Italian hospitals in Damascus.

During the meeting Mario Zenari said the violence in Syria hit the minorities hardest – primarily the Christian minority – and among them the most vulnerable, women and children.

He said that the war destroyed every third school and every second hospital was also either destroyed or rendered unusable. Zenari said that the Christian hospitals in Syria also receive Muslim patients, who are often surprised by the help they receive from those they regard as infidels.

“These health centers also serve reconciliation and social peace,” Zenari said.
