Municipal elections were held in October and opposition parties made some gains, most notably with the opposition coalition winning the position of mayor in the Hungarian capital of Budapest, but support for the ruling conservative Fidesz remained largely unchanged.

The second most trending search term was Andy Vajna, the American producer of Hungarian extraction with such movies under his belt as the Rambo series and some films of the Terminator franchise, who died on Jan. 20 in Budapest.

The third top result was Notre Dame in the wake of the fire that destroyed most of the Paris cathedral’s roof and upper walls on April 15.

In fourth was Love Island, the localized iteration of the British dating reality television show which became a runaway hit on television channel RTL Klub. It was filmed in Cyprus.

In fifth was Cameron Boyce, the U.S. actor who died of an epileptic seizure aged 20 on July 6.

In the various sub-categories, sporting events were naturally dominated by football – most notably the Hungary-Uruguay friendly that opened Budapest’s new Puskás Arena. In the recipes category, the winner was chicken breast.
