The public hospital El Can Misses de Ibiza has strengthened its security protocols after a 35-year-old Moroccan migrant sexually assaulted a 69-year-old patient with terminal cancer. After the incident, the suspect managed to access the health complex at dawn on May 14.

According to the police investigation, the man managed to enter the hospital without authorization and went through numerous checkpoints undetected before he arrived at the woman’s room. During the sexual assault, the Moroccan reportedly threatened to kill the woman.

He reportedly told her he would “cut her neck” if she screamed for help while he squeezed her throat. However, the woman managed to hit her emergency button. This may have saved the woman’s life, as once the alarm was activated, the man bounded out of the hospital, breaking a door in the process, according to Spanish news outlet El Debate.

The death threats and sexual assault occurred despite the fragile woman undergoing palliative care, which has sent shockwaves through the hospital center’s workers.

While the man managed to escape the hospital grounds, national police were able to identify him and arrest him days later. Spanish media has since learned that the man had an open deportation order, which was issued by a court for his long line of criminal offenses, including altercations and violent episodes on the island of Ibiza.

Remarkably, instead of trying him in court, authorities admitted him into the same hospital for psychiatric treatment where the elderly woman was raped. Although he was in a different unit, it remains unclear if the woman herself knows her attacker is in the same hospital complex.

The management in the Can Misses hospital are now reviewing security protocols in the wake of the sexual assault. Due to the foreigner, who allegedly wanted to rape an elderly woman, the main entrance of the hospital is no longer freely open to the public and will now be blocked during certain hours. The entrance must always be supervised, maintain a guard, and be tightly controlled by hospital staff.

Now, the hospital features an “extraordinary number of security guards,” with the plan to extend this trial phase throughout the year.

The hospital has also launched a campaign for doctors, nurses, and other staff warning them to keep an eye on suspicious activity. The campaign is entitled: “You are the eyes of our patients.”
