Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s post on X directed at the Republican Party is causing a stir in Washington, with the Polish Prime Minister suggesting Ronald Reagan would be appalled by the current debate on Capitol Hill blocking aid to Ukraine.
Tusk was referring to Wednesday’s Senate vote, where a bill combining aid for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan with immigration restrictions was primarily rejected by Republican votes. In response to Tusk’s post, Republican Senator from Ohio, James David Vance, advised him to “temper his own authoritarian impulses.”
Marco Rubio, a senator from Florida and former Republican primary candidate in the 2016 election, came to Vance’s defense.
Rubio also provided a brief comment to the Polish Press Agency.
“My message to Poland is: If they were the victims of an invasion of 8 million illegal immigrants, they would understand that they would prefer to deal with that before they deal with Ukraine,” said the vice-chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee.
According to Rubio, “aid to Ukraine is necessary, but it must first be provided to the USA.”
British foreign policy expert Nile Gardiner, a former advisor to Margaret Thatcher, also commented on the stance of the Polish government’s leader. He wrote that Tusk, who is responsible for imprisoning opposition members and stifling public media, wants to teach others about “democracy.”
