When the news broke out of the arrest of MPs Mariusz Kamiński and Maciej Wąsik, heroes in the fight against corruption, a friend sent me a message: “Welcome to Belarus.”
She is right.
A true regime has been born in Poland. Artificially created “legal arguments” are now being used in a brutal show of power. The two MPs, Kamiński and Wąsik, were arrested in defiance of rulings from the Constitutional Tribunal and the Supreme Court, and despite being pardoned by the president.
They were not just arrested anywhere either, but arrested by the police invading the residence of the head of state — without his consent, undermining his authority, casting a shadow over the president’s security.
They were arrested at the unspoken but clear wish of people who hate the fight against corruption. Let’s not be deceived by parliament’s speaker Szymon Hołownia’s smiling face. He’s a Joker. There are other people behind him — people none of us would want to associate with.
Kamiński and Wąsik were arrested to intimidate the entire nation. We are supposed to be afraid. Poles are supposed to be afraid. They are supposed to bow their heads. They are supposed to retreat into privacy. And then the government will imprison more Law and Justice (PiS) politicians, social activists, maybe even journalists. It will stop at nothing.
The Polish patriotic camp is to be destroyed, that is the goal of this new government so that it never rises again.
They will not succeed.
The government has sown poisoned seeds into the ground. It has made a great mistake.
Mariusz Kamiński and Maciej Wąsik are the first political prisoners in 34 years. They are heroes. Poland will not forget them. This country will demand justice for them.
