Szczerski recounted the telephone conversation between President Poroshenko and President Duda. According to him, Poroshenko had told Duda about the Sunday events and proposed possible scenarios of action for the following days.
“According to President Poroshenko, Russia’s actions have exhausted any nevi of aggression acts as defined by international law,” Szczerski said. The Ukrainian President explained that the Ukrainian vessels had been attacked when they were located in neutral waters. He claims that his country’s ships did not respond aggressively.

The two presidents also discussed Poroshenko’s notion to introduce martial law in ten of Ukraine’s regions bordering Russia. “The Ukrainian President assured that this is an extraordinary and limited measure and will not influence democratic procedures, including elections in Ukraine,” said Szczerski.
Szczerski assured that the current situation in Ukraine will not affect Poland’s security. He added, however, that after the annexation of Crimea the Azov Sea and Mariupol are “the next, very susceptible to danger region of Eastern Europe.”
On Sunday, Russian special forces fired upon and took over three Ukrainian navy vessels which were travelling from Odessa to Mariupol on the Azov Sea. Russia explained the attack by accusing the Ukrainian units of entering Russian territorial waters.
