The former Polish prime minister and current Law and Justice (PiS) MEP, Beata Szydło, has once again appealed in the European Parliament for the European Commission to scrap the ETS (Emission Trading System) and the Fit for 55 initiative to reduce emissions.
In a speech in the European Parliament, she pointed to the horrendous costs of the ETS and Fit for 55 policies.
The Fit for 55 packet of policies envisages increasing the emission reduction target from 40 to 55 percent by 2030, compared to 1990.
She also pointed to the social and economic instability caused by the pandemic and the war in Ukraine. She believes that Europeans currently fear the rise in prices of energy and fuel, as this inflation could lead to job losses and business closures.
The former Polish prime minister pointed to climate policies as a contributing factor to the uncertainty.
Szydło believes that both the ETS system and Fit for 55 initiative are increasing costs for European economies and reducing their competitiveness.
“An uncompetitive Europe in which life for its citizens is extremely expensive is the effect of policies such as ETS and Fit for 55,” Szydło added.
