Marc Thiessen, the American journalist who routinely appears on Fox News and writes for The Washington Post, suggested on social media to withdraw American troops from Germany and place U.S. soldiers on permanent bases in Poland.
The journalist’s post is a response to a tweet by American foreign policy expert, Ian Brzezinski, the brother of the U.S. ambassador to Warsaw, Mark Brzezinski. In Ian Brzezinski’s comment, he criticized the decision of the German government, which abandoned its commitment to NATO, to spend no less than 2 percent of GDP annually on defense.
Referring to Brzezinski’s tweet, Marc Thiessen wrote that “the line of contact has moved East” and “Poland is the new Germany,” so the U.S. should “close old Cold War bases, and station them in permanent bases in Poland.”
Germany had promised to allocate 2 percent of GDP annually for defense purposes and enshrine this in legislation. However, now the government has backed out of the plan to codify this rule into law, as reported last week by RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland (RND) and confirmed by a government spokesperson on Wednesday.
As a result, the previously adopted amendment to the funding law was removed. The government now claims that it will continue to adhere to the 2 percent goal, but without a legal commitment, as the relevant section has been removed from the country’s budgetary provisions act.
