A 20-year-old Afghan attacked two random women on the streets of the German city of Magdeburg, with the attacks occurring just two hours apart. The police and justice system are now being criticized for how they handled the case.

During the first incident, German police immediately released the Afghan after the first brutal beating targeting a 26-year-old woman. The woman was being strangled until she was saved by passersby who intervened. Despite the woman being strangled and suffering visible injuries, the police gave the man a “warning” and released him at around 11:00 a.m.

Just two hours later, at 1:00 p.m., he beat a 21-year-old woman and kicked her while she was on the ground. Once again, witnesses intervened.

“Witnesses were also able to deter the suspect from his attacks in this case and detain him until the police appeared,” the police stated.

Only after this second time did the presiding judge at the Magdeburg District Court issue an arrest warrant. The Afghan has been charged with attempted murder for strangling one of the victims.

Both women were treated at the hospital for their injuries. Police are claiming that they did not arrest the first suspect because they were not aware of the severity of the first victim’s injuries, which they state only became apparent once she was treated at the hospital. Once there, it became clear that the man would be charged with attempted murder. The Afghan is known to police for various other crimes as well.

The anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has reacted harshly to the incident and has released a statement, stating: “Women can hardly move safely in public spaces anymore, while authorities handle the situation with kid gloves instead of consistently protecting the local population from this imported violence.”

“The AfD demands an end to this naive, lenient justice system and the state’s ineffective, token measures. Foreign violent offenders who disregard our laws and the physical safety of citizens should not be admonished; they should be immediately detained and deported directly to their home countries.”
