Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s government is preparing a list of laws that will be dealt with after his governments successful takeover of the Constitutional Tribunal by force. This was announced by the head of the Chancellery of the Prime Minister, Jan Grabiec.
The government is currently working on a list of laws that have not been considered by the Constitutional Tribunal for almost 11 years.
“We will refer to the Constitutional Tribunal, like any government, cases that concern Poles,” Grabiec said on Wednesday, Nov. 4., on TVP Info.
“The judges showed during the General Assembly that they are not a machine in the hands of the government. We don’t know what the judges will do first; they will decide,” argued the KO politician.
Korwin-Piotrowska took over the Constitutional Tribunal and reduced the quorum to 8 judges
The day before, on Tuesday,, Nov. 3, a meeting of eight judges elected in this term of the Sejm was held at the Tribunal, during which the budget was adopted and a drawing of lots was held for judges to participate in disciplinary proceedings against the President of the Constitutional Tribunal, Bogdan Święczkowski, and his deputy, Bartłomiej Sochański.
To pass the motions, the chairwoman of the assembly, Anna Korwin-Piotrowska, reduced the required quorum from ten to eight. Last week, Korwin-Piotrowska was ushered into the Constitutional Tribunal building from the side of the Prime Minister’s Chancellery, after which she declared herself the judge presiding over the Constitutional Tribunal in Święczkowski’s place.
The seizure of power in the Tribunal was carried out with the participation of riot police equipped with helmets, shields and batons. Officers have been present in front of the Constitutional Tribunal headquarters since the end of October.
Tusk wants to talk to Nawrocki. When is the one-on-one meeting?
When asked when Prime Minister Donald Tusk would meet with President Karol Nawrocki face-to-face, Grabiec replied: “I won’t say. They agreed that the meeting would take place in a quiet atmosphere. I won’t reveal this information, but I can say that it’s a matter of the coming days.”
Tusk announced at a press conference after the National Security Council meeting that he had proposed a meeting with the president to look for ways to permanently reduce tensions.
“We both feel a common responsibility to try to seek agreements where possible in the situation of this growing threat from the east, in matters of security and internal order, and to calm emotions,” Tusk said.
During the meeting of the National Security Council, Nawrocki stated directly that the head of government was responsible for “all illegal activities” in the Constitutional Tribunal.
“This is not only a crime against the Constitution; it is a mistake,” the president pointed out.
