Polish General Leon Komornicki, a former deputy chief of staff, has said that the Ukrainians are for the time being engaged in tactical rather than strategic maneuvers, therefore they cannot be said to have launched a counteroffensive
Komornicki made the comments in an interview with Polish news outlet Nowa Konfederacja, with the retired general saying he feels that the Ukrainians are not making much headway into Russian-occupied territory. This means that Ukraine does not have the necessary numerical or logistical superiority to be able to break through Russian defensive positions and make significant territorial gains.
Komornicki said that Russia has had months to prepare its defensive lines, which are well-formed in territories that have been thoroughly mined. Moreover, in certain parts of the front, it is Russian forces that are attacking, and there is a danger that it is the Russians who could break through Ukrainian defensive positions.
He advises the Ukrainians to stabilize the frontline and increase artillery firepower. Artillery is needed to secure the corridors into which the infantry can move and make territorial advances. The retired general said Ukraine needs to destroy Russia’s anti-tank capacity as well. The problem, however, is that the Russians are the ones with the superior artillery firepower.
His conclusion is that Ukraine simply does not have the assets and resources to launch a counteroffensive.
Komornicki’s comments come after Hungarian security expert Péter Tarjányi recently said that if Ukraine had actually launched its counteroffensive, it was a failure.
“It has by now become obvious that the spring-summer counteroffensive is not proceeding as planned by the Western allies and Ukraine, and the Russian defense has proven it is on solid footing,” said Tarjányi while analyzing the current situation on the frontline.
He added, however, that Ukraine was likely holding back resources and that a concerted counteroffensive would soon be launched against Russia.
