Poland’s game with the US and Germany

Trump’s engagement with the Three Seas Initiative has brought it to new heights. Marcin Kędzierski warns however, that the escalating conflict between Germany and the US could be dangerous for Poland.

One shouldn’t have expected that after the meeting of Andrzej Duda and Donald Trump there would be concrete decisions. If someone was expecting the declaration of American sanctions on Nord Stream 2 then they were in the wrong.

It is good that the Polish president underlined the necessity of the presence of US troops in Poland. The Polish army is still too weak to be threatening to Russia. To build a force to be reckoned with would take several years. Meanwhile, Poland cannot count on the military support of other European states.

It was also due to Trump’s presence at the previous Three Seas summit that the initiative was able to prosper. It’s not a coincidence that Jean-Claude Juncker took part in the summit, Germany asks for a permanent observer status and Duda’s visit to the White House takes place soon after it.

It’s important to remain realistic and to remember that Poland is a less crucial ally to the US than Germany or France. Although German-American relations are tense, Poland as the leader of the Three Seas could provide strategic balance.
