Andrzej Wróblewski’s “Two Married Women” sold for 13.44 million zlotys (€2.9 million), making it both the most expensive painting sold in Poland and the most expensive art piece sold on the Polish market.
Wróblewski’s “Two Married Women” is one of the most important works of Polish post-war art. It was finished in 1949 and was the second piece in the “Social Contrasts” series. The painting depicts two women with different values. One of the women is wealthy, young and elegant and can be seen holding a small black dog in her arms. The other woman is a proud mother — a proletarian with a baby in her arms.
The sale of Wróblewski’s “Two Married Women” was yet another record broken at a DESA Unicum auction in Warsaw. Previously, the most expensively sold painting was Wojciech Fangor’s “M22” which was sold for €1.6 million in December 2020, and the most expensive art piece sold on the Polish market was the 50-figure work “Tłum III” by Magdalena Abakanowicz (€2.86 million) in October 2021.
Last year’s painting record was broken twice at the most recent DESA Unicum auction. In addition to the “Two Married Women,” it was also broken by Roman Opałka’s “Detal 407817 – 434714” from the “1965/1 – ∞” series, which sold for €1.87 million.
The Tuesday auction was the most expensive one in Polish history, with total turnover reaching €6.93 million.
DESA CEO Juliusz Windorbski emphasized that the most recent auction on its own was worth over 30 percent of last year’s turnover at all post-war art auctions which amounted to over €21.6 million.
