After a brawl between 30 to 40 youths was reported in the French city of Antibes, a 21-year-old man who ran from police lost his life after getting stuck on a spiked fence while fleeing from police.

The initial brawl occured at 37 rue Dulys on Saturday night at 11:10 p.m., at which point a police pursuit occured, which took place over several kilometers, ending at the Allée des Mimosas.

There, four to five of youths jumped over a gate to escape police, but the last individual to jump up was tasered by police police, but they were still unable to handcuff him.

“A few minutes later, he called the fire department himself,” the prosecutor stated, apparently from serious blood loss.

Upon arrival, paramedics found the man was bleeding tremendous amounts from his femoral artery, at which point he went “in cardiac arrest. Resuscitation attempts were not successful, according to Grasse Public Prosecutor Eric Camous

An autopsy on the man will now be performed to determine whether one of the spikes on the gate the victim jumped over pierced his artery. In addition, authorities were also investigating the assault that led to the police chase.

According to media outlet France 3, “the Grasse public prosecutor’s office has also activated the ‘victim support pathway’ so that the family of the deceased young man can receive psychological support in the face of this tragedy.”

There were two murders in the area in 2024, notes France 3.

“In September 2024, a young man was stabbed to death in the chest after a fight on Boulevard Édouard Baudoin, near Le Village, a nightclub in Juan-les-Pins. Two weeks later, another homicide of an 18-year-old occurred on Chemin des Colombes,” the paper wrote.
