An African man who already has 25 convictions on his record was convicted this Monday for exposing his penis to a child, the child’s mother, and the child’s sister before attacking and injuring French police officers at the Grau-du-Roi beach and the public square hosting a local carousel.

The criminal court in Nîmes handed out a sentence of one year in prison and one year probation for the 40-year-old man, who has a violent criminal history.

The incident took place during pleasant weather on the evening of June 3. The area was crowded with people when the intoxicated African migrant began making a scene in front of a small child. When the child’s mother and her sister stepped in to intervene, the man exposed his penis while making highly inappropriate remarks, which were not disclosed by French press outlet Objectif Gard.

Once officers arrived on the scene, he forcibly resisted when they tried to arrest him. During the struggle, he slammed a door directly into the head of a municipal police officer. The injured officer was subsequently granted a 10-day temporary incapacity for work (ITT) due his injuries.

Gendarmes were called in to assist, but the backup patrol also faced equally intense resistance, including gouging the eyes of a gendarme with his finger while subjecting another to a barrage of racist insults. The French press did not disclose what those racist insults were.

“But I too am African,” said the man during his court trial while trying to convince the court for leniency. “I have nothing to do with any of this, I am innocent. In any case, I have never committed violence against the police.”

Court President Mathilde Pagès responded by reading the suspect’s extensive criminal record out loud, which features 25 prior mentions, including five specifically linked to contempt and resisting arrest against police officers and gendarmes.

The African was sentenced to two years in prison, including one year of a probationary suspended sentence lasting three years, which legally mandates that he seek medical treatment and reimburse his victims. The remaining one-year prison term is firm but not final.
