A grim discovery along the banks of the Rhine has shaken the quiet Swiss municipality of Stein in Canton Aargau. Local authorities are conducting a comprehensive criminal investigation following the recovery of dismembered human remains and the subsequent arrest of a Bangladeshi suspect who turned out to be the victim’s roommate.
The sequence of events began when acquaintances reported a resident of a local asylum shelter in Stein missing. Passersby walking along the banks of the Rhine River spotted a suspicious sack in the water. Upon retrieving it, they discovered human remains, specifically a leg, and immediately alerted local law enforcement.
Subsequent searches conducted by the Aargau Cantonal Police, supported by specialist police divers, led to the recovery of additional bags containing dismembered body parts along the river and nearby banks. The Institute of Forensic Medicine later formally confirmed the identity of the victim as the missing resident, a 33-year-old national from Burundi in Bangladesh.
Following forensic evidence collection at the asylum shelter and surrounding locations, officers arrested a 43-year-old Bangladeshi national who shared a room with the victim, according to Swiss news outlet SRF. The Office of the Chief Public Prosecutor of Aargau promptly requested pre-trial detention for the suspect while the criminal proceedings move forward.
According to updates released by investigating authorities, there is currently no evidence indicating a political or religiously motivated crime.
During initial legal proceedings and questioning, the suspect exhibited signs of psychological disorders.
Medical experts and investigators are currently evaluating whether underlying mental health issues played a role in the incident.
Addressing the current status of the investigation, prosecutors noted in a public statement: “The exact course of events and the background to the crime are the subject of ongoing investigations. To date, there is no evidence of a politically or religiously motivated homicide.”
This is far from the first case of foreigners involved with dismembering victims, including cases involving roommates. In one particular case, an Afghan migrant was accused of killing his roommate in Germany and raping his corpse over a period of days.
