Leading politicians of the Law and Justice (PiS) party have been showcasing the referendum questions on social media since Friday, with one focused on mass illegal immigration and other key questions for the future of the country.
The first question was introduced by the head of PiS, Jarosław Kaczyński, and pertains to the privatization of Polish companies: “Do you support the sale of state-owned enterprises?”
The second question was conveyed on Saturday morning by former Prime Minister Beata Szydło. It relates to raising the retirement age, which is currently 60 for women and 65 for men: “Do you support increasing the retirement age for women to beyond 60 and for men to beyond 65?”
The third question, related to illegal migration, was announced on Sunday by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki: “Do you support accepting thousands of illegal immigrants from the Middle East and Africa, in line with the mandatory relocation mechanism imposed by European bureaucracy?”
On Monday morning, the PiS social media channels unveiled the fourth referendum question. It was presented by the Minister of National Defense, Mariusz Błaszczak, and reads: “Do you support the removal of the barrier on the border between Poland and the Republic of Belarus?”
In the upcoming parliamentary session, scheduled for August 16 and 17, PiS plans to introduce a resolution encompassing these four questions. On the last day of the session the parliament is expected to discuss the motion to conduct a nationwide referendum together with the general elections to be held on Oct. 15.
The idea of holding a nationwide referendum was first announced by the PiS chairman Deputy Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczyński in June. At that time, PiS proposed that the referendum focus on the issue of migrant relocation.
Later, the ruling party decided that additional questions would also be included in the referendum.
