Poland’s Deputy Minister for the Interior Paweł Szefernaker tweeted the news. “Over 400 students from India who crossed Poland’s border with Ukraine fleeing war are returning safely to their homeland.”

The evacuation of students from India who fled to Poland from Russia’s assault on Ukraine has been monitored by Poland’s ambassador to India Adam Burakowski. He reported about two planes leaving Rzeszów for Delhi.

The evacuation of the students is taking place as part of close cooperation between the Indian and Polish government and is part of operation “Ganges,” which is being coordinated by the ministry of transport.

India’s transport minister, Vijay Kumar Singh, arrived in Poland to oversee the operation, and after announcing the departure of the first plane carrying 218 passengers and the second with 219, he thanked the Polish President Andrzej Duda and Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.

The evacuation was also one of the subjects raised during a phone call between President Duda and India’s PM Narendra Modi, during which the two leaders discussed how to persuade Russia to end its aggression against Ukraine.

In a less welcome development, three citizens of India were attacked on Tuesday night by five men in the border town of Przemyśl. One of the Indians was taken to hospital. The police are investigating the incident.

Wednesday was the seventh day of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. According to Polish border services, more than 450,000 people have arrived in Poland fleeing the war. The vast majority of the arrivals are Ukrainians. However, significant numbers of citizens of the U.S., India, Nigeria and Georgia are among those arriving.
