The meeting between German Foreign Affairs Minister Heiko Maas and Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs Jacek Czaputowicz reportedly being civil and empathetic is just diplomatic guff. In reality, the German foreign minister was prepared to discuss erecting a monument to Poles as victims of German aggression in the Second World War but rejected outright any discussion of reparations.
This was no different from what Maas had said during his last visit in 2019.
The problem is that we are facing the scandalous politicization of 6 million victims of German aggression in Poland.
German officials are always ready to admit guilt at anniversaries of Auschwitz and the Warsaw Uprising, but these words are not followed by actions. Minister Maas needs to be reminded that the German Bundestag was to debate a memorial to Polish victims at the beginning of May, and the issue was shelved without any explanation.
